Nicola Grellier trained at Wimbledon and Chelsea Art Schools from 1984-88. She lived and worked in Gloucestershire for many years, being greatly drawn to the hills, buildings and animals around Stroud. For 5 years she 2007 – 2012 she lived in West London until happily returning to the hills of Stroud.
She has a deep commitment to drawing, strength of line and an enjoyment of accident whilst the pleasure taken in language, words and coincidence hover within the images.
Nicola’s paintings reveal an adoration for oil paint but also great enjoyment when using house paint and other media. In most recent years she has increasingly employed collage for it’s immediacy, vivacity and humorous possibilities, and drawing for it’s honesty. Her collages became increasingly text-obsessed, perhaps due to living in the city. Nicola took a 4 year break until January 2016 to design and direct Mad In England Needlepoint Kits. Now fully back in the studio her work has taken a turn to very figurative painting focussing on dressed absurdist players. New work will be shown on the site soon, meanwhile much can be seen on Instagram mad_in_england.
She exhibits both locally and nationally and occasionally undertakes corporate and private commissions.
